International Graduate Legal Research Conference (IGLRC) 2017

The eleventh annual IGLRC will be held on 3-4 April 2017 at King’s College London, in the heart of London’s legal district. The conference provides PhD students and early career researchers with an unparalleled opportunity to present their work and engage in academic debate. Eminent scholars and practitioners in each subject field will chair the subject panels.

Topic

This year’s topic is “Law and Crisis”. The topic can be interpreted to mean crises within the law itself or the law’s response to crises. The word ‘crisis’ is to be interpreted broadly. The conference would welcome papers that engage with legal and institutional responses to political, economic, environmental, social and cultural crises, as well as the issues faced by legal systems in accommodating non-state systems of governance or social, religious and economic differences. These are merely examples and the scope of the conference is not limited to the sub- themes mentioned.

Submissions from all legal and interdisciplinary fields are welcome. We encourage creative approaches to interpreting the topic and look forward to seeing how it relates to your area of research, and international and transnational perspectives are highly welcomed. The topic is deliberately broad so as to accommodate submissions from a wide range of legal scholarship.

Examples of sub-themes:

  • Business and Human Rights
  • Energy and the Environment
  • European Law
  • Human Rights
  • Migration and Asylum
  • Institutional Reforms in Development and Transnational States
  • The Changing Role of Institutions in Times of Crisis
  • Norm Internalisation
  • Role of Law in Changing Cultural Practices
  • Legal History
  • Legal Education
  • Marginalised in Identities and the Push to Legal Peripheries
  • Legal Identities in a Globalised World
  • Perspectives on Institutional and Social Challenges
  • Globalisation of Legal Standards

This list is not exhaustive. These are just examples of areas the topic can apply to.
